AFCON 2023: Nigeria vs Angola – preview, head-to-head, kickoff time

After a commanding performance against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, the Super Eagles of Nigeria will be back in action on Friday against the Black Antelopes of Angola for a place in the semi-final of the AFCON.

Though Nigeria’s performance in the group stage left a lot more to be desired, the Super Eagles stepped up against Cameroon in what was a convincing performance that ignited hopes that the team could go ahead and claim their fourth AFCON crown in Cote D’Ivoire.

Angola, on the other hand, have been stellar in the ongoing competition, finishing first in their group and making light work of Namibia in the Round of 16.

The match promises to be an interesting one given how determined both teams are to win the AFCON title, and especially given their peculiar head-to-head records.

Angola’s first-choice goalkeeper, Adilson Neblú was given a straight red card for handling the ball beyond his penalty area in the 16th minute of the game over Namibia.

António Signori who replaced him in the game will most likely start against Nigeria.

Midfielder Beni Mukendi earlier left the Angola’s camp to return to his Portuguese club, Casa Pia, after having limited playing time in Ivory Coast.

For Nigeria, Stanley Nwabali sustained an injury in the second half of their match against Cameroon and is doubtful for the Angola game.

If he fails a late fitness test, head coach Jose Peseiro may rely on Francis Uzoho to replace the Chippa United goalkeeper.

Captain William Troost-Ekong is also a potential injury risk, otherwise the team is in good health.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Nigeria vs Angola is scheduled for a 6pm Nigeria time kick-off on Friday, February 2, 2024.

The match will take place at Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium.
